Eyes Wide Open

These eyes of mine were closed to how you treated me. They didn’t see the reality that you never loved me. These tears won’t wash my pain away. I dry them and see you for who you are today. They’re red now and stained but they’re wide open to your game.

I sat across from Pharaoh. He was holding a conversation with City’s mom, my aunt Dana, but his eyes were intensely watching me. We showed up at her door this morning and she insisted on fixing us a huge breakfast. She had shrimp and grits, eggs, sausage and catfish. It was all my favorites, but I couldn’t touch my plate. I didn’t have an appetite. Who could eat after finding out that they’d been living a lie? The last couple of days had been crazy. Trying to get out of Atlanta without being seen. Driving to New Orleans because we couldn’t fly here. Coming to terms with the death of my father and trying to wrap my mind around the fact I’d been living a lie for the past few years. That part right there, the lie part was causing a pain in my heart and making my stomach upset. I cringed every time my mind recalled the fact I’d been living with a man I didn’t even know. I was giving my body to someone that was only fooling me. I was trusting and free with every part of me and my body and my money with a man whose name was a fake. Just that fact only had me shaking. How fucking dumb was I? How blind was I? Everyone saw he was no good but me. Pharaoh touched my hand. His touch put me at ease again. I didn’t even know how he did that.

“Honey, what’s the matter, you been in Atlanta that long you don’t recognize good food? You better eat. I made all your favorites. It’s a ride up there to Angola; this will hold you.” Aunt Dana looked at me and took a seat. “I’m sorry you had to find out about your dad this way, but I knew nothing but death could keep him from your mom. He loved that heifer.” She laughed.

“Everything is so good Mrs. Dana. Eat shorty,” Pharaoh said.

I told Pharaoh I wanted to come here so I could tell my mom in person. He agreed. He said he had some people meeting us here, so we would fly back to Atlanta. I didn’t know how I could face my mom today. How I could tell her she was never getting out of that place? She and I wrote often, and I swear she believed my dad was going to ride in on some white horse and save her any day. “Do you think she knew? You know, felt like he was dead, somewhere deep down inside.” I mean, I thought about it, but I also thought he had just skipped out on her and me.

“Deep down, she knew.
